I know that sometimes when I am walking in the rain I take a walk down memory lane. It usually makes me think of my early years in Albuquerque, where rainy days were very rare. When it did rain from the heavens I was always splashing around in it and somethings don't ever change. I am a rainaholic! John K. Harrell Fine Art
I was just in Puerta Vallarta Mexico and I came upon this colorful parrot who was a great poser. I have been thinking about painting him since that day. So today is the day for him to be immortalized.
The capital is a major landmark in the Denver skyline. It is one of the only gold plated domes in the country. Currently, it is in need of some serious restoration efforts but none the less it is a very worthy subject for a painting!
I tried to create atmosphere in this urban landscape. Sometimes the feeling conveyed in a painting is the more important than how well I executed the painting. I wanted it to evoke a mood of romance rather than the hustle and bustle of a busy city street. Hopefully, one can sense the mood my brush is creating.
Kit Mahoney, my partner in the gallery was so kind as to let me paint this from a picture from her recent trip to China. She said this chef was preparing her lunch during a break from plien air painting. Kit could smell the food he was cooking the whole time she was painting and just had to stop and taste this man's art. I can only imagine how delectable the food tasted when prepared by such an artistic chef! John K. Harrell Fine Art Daily Impressionist Painters
This is another study for my upcoming show in November. The Tivoli is a famous landmark in Denver. It is now a shopping mall and movie theaters. I have always been drawn to it's impact on the Denver landscape.
This is a tranquil fall setting at a park in Portland Oregon. Filtered sunlight through the colorful vegetation was fun to paint. A very timely subject. John K. Harrell Fine Art
I am preparing for my show here at Brushstrokes and my focus for this show is Denver landscapes. The show opens November 6th. This is a study for a 36 x 36 called Summer at Lakeside. Lakeside amusement part has been a Denver landmark since the 1920's and I hope it stirs up happy memories for many a viewer.
$100.00 + $10.00 S/H The winter landscape is so full of amazing color. The contrast of the stream cutting through the willows and the brilliant snow is eye catching to say the least.
Jumping onto the Light Rail can be a spectacular fall experience. The trees are beginning their fall change and produce a colorful panorama while on the ride home from the studio.
I was out taking pictures at twilight which is my favorite time to take pictures and this cute lady was on here way to meet friends. She had just ended a cell phone conversation that she was having and said "I will meet you there!" I thought to myself that she was going to brighten any room she entered!
I love summer but welcome the brilliance of fall. It seems as though the summer flies by and before you know it a hint of the coming season shows up in the landscape. This one tree was starting to turn yellow. Otherwise, this street scene could of been a summer one.
These women are from the Sudan. They were on their way to a dedication ceremony for the recently built school. This is the study for my larger piece I am donating to the Project Education Sudan charity. Check out my web site to see the larger piece.
Here is another painting inspired by my search for images for my November show. The beautiful light at dusk is so attractive and makes the landscape rich in color.
I have been busy collecting source material for my up coming show at Brushstrokes Gallery. Taking new photographs is one of my favorite activities other than painting and when I find a gem like this one I have to run home and paint it. This is the Denver Academy.
I don't paint too many vista type landscapes but I was drawn to the mountain color and the meandering creek in this composition. John K. Harrell Fine Art
I am so fascinated by the color of the willows in winter. The contrast between their orange branches and the blue shadows they cast on the snow are eye catching in the winter landscape. John K. Harrell Fine Art Daily Impressionist Painters
Steamboat Colorado is the location of this wonderful vista full of rolled hay. The smell of the harvested hay was intoxicating and I hope the painting is too.
Denver has a wonderful skyline. This is a view from City Park and is a popular tourist attraction because of this vantage point. John K. Harrell Fine Art
Sometimes I just want to let loose with my work and just paint without being concerned about the outcome. I did that today and actually produced a piece that I am very proud of. Painting and pleasure a great combination!
I was totally captivated with the cities of Germany. These to officers were keeping order on the street. I can't remember which city this was but safe to say I had a spectacular time documenting my trip with my camera.
The warm light of the sun setting on this amusement park makes for an eye catching painting. I have to get my reflections in somewhere consequently, the glassy surface of this lake made a spectacular find. This amusement park is called Lakeside and has been entertaining Denver families since the 1950's.
I can find the most interesting subjects to paint in my own back yard. Denver can look so romantic at times. I often get the comment when I paint Denver on a day like this that it looks so much like Paris or London. Let's just pretend and call it little Paris. John K. Harrell Fine Art
We have all been in this woman's position. Enjoying vacation in a new city taking in the sights and partaking in the local fair. But, we all have to document the trip only she was a subject for a photo and a painting. John K. Harrell Fine Art
It is a unique view of Denver when you can see the buildings of downtown framed in the beautiful landscape of Cherry Creek. It is very park like but natural at the same time. John K. Harrell Fine Art
One of my favorite passions is to paint figures. I love to capture a simple event and gesture as my focus. This young lady was sitting at the park putting her shoes back on after taking a dip in the large water fountain. She was very entertained by here surroundings and not paying much attention to what she was doing. I so remember that summer feeling.
It's difficult to paint the magic I felt the whole time I was in Italy but I will keep trying. Italy inspired a whole new appreciation for the urban landscape.
